Review for the festival Baltica'03, Vilaka,
24 November 2002

In Sunday, November 24 jury was continued review of ensembles of Balvi district.

Photo
Atzele

The first performed Vilaka folklore ensemble Atzele. The ensemble sang about bread from sowing up to eating. Sang beautifully, played on zither (well) and violin (too academically). Between songs they read fragments of works of Imants Ziedonis. It looks, that the style to read texts between songs, which was popular in Soviet time, comes back.

Abrenīte

Vilaka ethnographical ensemble Abrenīte sang good. In the ensemble are really authentical singers, however, it looks that the leader does not give them an opportunity to show what they can.

Kuprova ethnographical ensemble

Kuprova ethnographical ensemble, though consisting only ōf six people, sang vigorously. Especially loud and low voice has the leader.

Medneva ethnographical ensemble

Medneva ethnographical ensemble has chosen a subject of shepherd. I don't think they really needed the big shepherd-girl, who walked in the hall, however, the sound was really good. There are a lot of singers in this group, and majority has load voices. It is one of few Latvian ethnographical ensembles, which has not only a present, but also a future (in the sense of ethnographical singing).

Susaji ethnographical ensemble

Susaji ethnographical ensemble has shown something between ethnographical and folklore performance. On the one hand - in ensemble there are truly ethnographically singing women. On the another hand are dancers with well-known Latgalian dances. Between these extremes are one man singer (by the words, chairman of parish) and young woman squeeze-box player (leader of the group).
